On designing Data Drama

On the 8th of September 2021, a number of school students from the Lahti area joined students of Theatrum Olga, Suomen Diakoniaopisto, to take part in a Data Drama experience, which used embodied approaches to data exploration. The purpose of Data Drama is to provide a more-than-human context for people that are not used to working with data. The experience aims to inspire them and make them feel comfortable to engage with data.

ReThink ReMake ReCycle at the Digital Living Lab Days 2021

Participatory approaches such as citizen science offer the potential to open up research to society, yet the majority of people participating are affluent and well-educated. At ENoLL’s Digital Living Lab Days 2021 in September, KWMC’s Lorraine Hudson shared experiences from the UK case study “ReThink ReCycle ReMake“, where the Bristol Living Lab collaborated with people typically underrepresented in science – those who face social economic disadvantage and Black, Asian and other minority ethnic communities.  KWMC had a practitioner presentation accepted through the conference peer review process, which was attended by 391 people.

How we define key terms within the ParCos project

ParCos is exploring creative and inclusive approaches to science communication and ways to support people in sharing their own science stories. Accuracy and clarity are important in both effective communication and honest science, so in the spirit of these principles we have produced a glossary to explain what we mean by specific words and phrases that are often used within ParCos. The glossary is the result of a workshop with ParCos project partners, who are active in different sectors and contributed based on their respective contexts. We recognise that others may define and use these words differently, but hope that this glossary can be useful in revisiting the meaning and impact of this specific terminology.

Engaging youth in data stories through a personalised weather forecast

As part of the Belgian case studies, the Flemish public broadcaster VRT welcomes children and families to experience a personalised weather forecast at the ‘More Weather’ expo in Ostend from the 3rd of July till the 29th of August. The forecast allows them to revisit the weather data for their day of birth, as well as over time. By creating a data story that is relatable and accessible to a wider audience, VRT aims to present data via media in an engaging way and encourage a younger audience to interpret that data. By immersing them in the storytelling and sensemaking process of weather data, we aim to illustrate the larger theme of climate change.
